THE SON OF SEX PISTOL’S MANAGER MALCOLM MCLARENMALCOLM MCLAREN AND VIVIENNE WESTWOOD HAS SET FIRE TO MILLIONS OF POUNDS OF PUNK MEMORABILIA ON THE BOAT ON THE RIVER THEMES, IT WAS THE MOST PUNK BASH IN THE LAST MONTHS ON THE GENTRIFIED LONDON GROUNDS.
WE MET HIM BEFORE THAT AT DISASTROUS ART TALK AT LONDON MUSEUM, WHERE JOE WAS THE MAIN HERO.
WE MET JOE AT HIS ATELIER AGAIN TO FIND OUT FOR MORE DETAILS: IS THE PUNK “DEAD” OR NOT?
DT 500 MAG: – You said: – “ The whole idea of Punk was to turn all the propaganda upside down and to find out the truth for yourself. ” As a son of punk, how did you find the truth for yourself?
JOE: – You have to understand who controls the media and what their agendas are.
DT 500 MAG: – You said: – “Punk was never, never meant to be nostalgic – and you can’t learn how to be Punk at a Museum of London workshop.” Joe, don’t you think that nostalgy can be a good inspiration? Especially for a younger generation who couldn’t experience the actual time of punk or meet you or other punks in person?
JOE: – It is just a pose with no understanding or position to start to learn anything from. It put’s you at a disadvantage immediately.
” Nostalgia is just a chocolate box image. It’s meaningless.”
DT 500 MAG: – Thanx for a longtime-not-seen action which you did hilariously great some ago, The “burn of 5 ml pound punk memorabilia” … Is punk alive after that?
” If I’m not a Punk, then I don’t want to be one.”
DT 500 MAG: – You said: – “Punk has become another marketing tool to sell you something you don’t need,” What about your own clothing brand ”A Child of the Jago,” doesn’t ́t it have any consumeristic reasons? Or would you also destroy half of your business if it were to become a vast global corporation?
JOE: – A Child of the Jago is intentionally small. The business the model only works at that level, it is not trying to be Punk like Macdonalds.
DT 500 MAG: – You said: – “The illusion of an alternative choice. Conformity in another uniform.” You do agree there are a lot of current and generally restless people out there, no wonder why… However, I am curious, how do we manage compromise so far? Where is/was the limit? Compromise vs. Conformism (Conformity)?
JOE: – People need to cooperate, and it is better to do this without compromise or conformity.
DT 500 MAG: – Johnny Lydon said: – “selfish f****** lingerie expert,” and he added: – “ the memorabilia should have been sold and the money given to charity. “ Any comments on that?
JOE: – John has not had anything interesting to say for over 30 years, and he’s not getting any better at it.
DT 500 MAG: – One music critic, named Neil McCormick wrote: “It’s not punk, it’s vandalism. Joe Corre, poor little rich boy, setting fire to a heritage he has no claim to.” Are you a poor rich boy, Joe?
JOE: –This is my personal family heritage collection, of course, I have a right to it.
” Fuck off, this is a typical snide comment from a conformist idiot.”
DT 500 MAG: – A banner on the “burn” boat was: “Extinction! Your future”. That is a high banner, but what do you want to say to the ones who understand it already and fighting against the extinction as you announced, what would you said to these people?
JOE: – Fight harder!
DT 500 MAG: – You also rebuffed another suggestion that you should use the proceeds to buy 28,000 guitars and give them to young people to restart the punk movement. “Punk rock to me is not about music,” said Corré. “I don’t know what 28,000 guitars would really do.” What about starting a magazine or a tv series?
JOE: – I’ll finish the documentary first and see what happens after that.
DT 500 MAG: – Yes, I’ve heard that you are filming a movie? Tell us about its motive?
JOE: – It will be coming out later this year, and any profits will be used to continue the fight against EXTINCTION.
DT 500 MAG: – I want to ask you about your quote again: – “ PUNK LONDON celebration” of forty years since the release of ANARCHY IN THE UK! Supported by and set up to benefit the British Tourist Industry, The British Fashion Council, The British Museum, The Mayor of London!? WHAT !? ”. What do you say about the fact that the P.L.C. could promote the idea to people who do not know it so well as you, don’t you think the idea will manifest anyway, isn´t that more important?
JOE: – What idea will manifest?
DT 500 MAG: – You said about your childhood that there was a lot of hate around you from the outside. You weren’t welcome to posh places, people were crashing the shop of your mom, etc… And your Quote: – “now the punk is used by the establishment to show how ‘fair’ British society is because they are so “tolerant, open and democratic, it’s in fashion”. Every high street store pedals their own cliched version, credit cards, insurance, Burberry the 1970’s purveyor of the “wankers mac” is now punk in the British ‘tradisheeaan’ etc… So what the fuck does it mean anymore? Culture in decline is marked by the conformity of opinion.”… How would you prefer Punk being used?
” I think Punk is a state of mind and can only be used by the individual, but it’s dead now, don’t worry about the word Punk to define your belief system, think of another one.”
DT 500 MAG: – You said: – “There are parallels to be drawn between the no future generation of the 1970’s and today’s. Our environment is being destroyed at a rate of knots, Fracking our land! TTIP!” What shall we do?
JOE: – There are lots of things we can do, we live in an age of democracy by the wallet.
” Everything you buy is a vote. Choose well. Don’t give your money to the corporations, Nestle, Starbucks, etc. Change your energy provider to a renewable energy one. Stop eating meat. Don’t be a slave to debt, go bankruptcy instead.”
DT 500 MAG: – Joe, Trump vs Brexit vs future?
” The lunatics are running the Asylum. The future is what we make of it.”
DT 500 MAG: – You said: – “ London is suffering from social cleansing, having its guts ripped out and being turned into some sort of theme park for rich people who don’t pay their taxes while ordinary people cannot afford to live here!” We did an interview with Clayton Patterson, he is working against gentrification in NYC too, as some other real-life heroes do. Joe, what do you think about the concept of unity? The unity of people like you? Could that kind of integration inspire or naturally move others for more actions?
JOE: – I hope so.
” We have to keep shouting about it until we make it really uncomfortable for the speculators.”
DT 500 MAG: – Joe, thank you!
