YOU SEE THE CYCLISTS DELIVERING FOOD PACKED IN PRETTY PINK BOXES AROUND THE OSLO CITY CENTRE WHERE THE TOWNHALL BELLS ARE PLAYING VERSIONS OF MOTORHEAD, AND DAVID BOWIE AND THE SNOWSHOVELLING TRUCK IS SCRAPING THE TARMAC, AND THE SIREN IS WAILING ANNOUNCING ANOTHER RUMBLING EXPLOSION?
ONE OF THE CYCLISTS IS ME, RIDER NUMBER 164. I CYCLE 5 HOURS A DAY ON WEEKDAYS AND ON WEEKENDS 6. I GET PAID FOR RIDING A BIKE, AND I CALL THAT A REVOLUTION, OR AS MY ANAGRAMMATICAL FRIENDS MIGHT SAY: A VELORUTION! (VELO= BICYCLE)
I BEGAN THE JOB A WEEK AGO AT THE SAME TIME AS A GATHERING OF NOISE MUSICIANS, PERFORMANCE ARTISTS, GAMERS AND INVENTORS KICKED OFF THE MULTINO FESTIVAL AT THE GRUNERLØKKA LIBRARY.
GIVEN THAT LIBRARIES ARE LIKE CHURCHES AND HOSPITALS IN SO FAR AS LOUD NOISE IS NOT ALLOWED, I WAS PARTICULARLY ATTRACTED TO THIS EVENT. SO, EVERY EVENING AFTER MY SHIFT, OR EVEN DURING THE SHIFT SOMETIMES, I WOULD STOP THE OLD LIBRARY AND HELP MYSELF WITH SOME EARPLUGS AND FREE VEGAN FOOD AND MEET NEW PEOPLE.
THERE WERE TWO ADJACENT ROOMS THAT HOSTED NUMEROUS 20 MINUTE-LONG CONCERTS. EACH DAY WOULD HAVE A 5 HOUR PROGRAM, SO IT WAS A ROLLERCOASTER OF SENSATIONS FOR ME AFTER CYCLING FOR 5 HOURS IN MINUS 10 DEGREES IN THE SILENT SNOW.
THE AUDIENCE AT THE FESTIVAL WOULD SIT IN ONE OF THE TWO ADJACENT ROOMS, ONE OF THE TWO ROOMS WAS THE COMIC BOOK SECTION, AND WE WOULD LISTEN TO POW! BANG! WHIZZZ TO OUR HEARTS CONTENT
ONE EVENING, AFTER MIDNIGHT IN BETWEEN TWO SETS, THE STAGE WAS INVADED BY A SOMEWHAT AGITATED RAPPER WHOM I GENTLY ESCORTED OUT OF THE LIBRARY, BEATBOXING.
THERE WERE MANY OTHER SPONTANEOUS COLLABORATIONS THAT HAPPENED DURING THE FESTIVAL, AND I WAS EVEN ASKED BY A BAND THAT HAD JOINED FORCES FOR THE EVENING SHOW, TO MAKE DRAWINGS FOR THEIR CD THAT WAS GOING TO BE RECORDED THAT SAME NIGHT.
I GOT TALKING TO ONE OF THE MOST ENERGETIC DRUMMERS I HAVE EVER HEARD, AND HE HAPPENED ALSO TO BE ON OF THE ORGANIZERS.
HE HAD SHORT BLACK HAIR AND A RELATIVELY SHORT BLACK GOATEE WHICH HE CLAIMED NOT TO HAVE TRIMMED IN 8 YEARS.
I HEARD HIM PLAY TOGETHER WITH A MORE BEARDED FELLOW WHO HAD MIKED UP VYNIL RECORDS AND WAS STROKING THEM WITH A VIOLIN BOW. THE YOUNG MAN WITH THE OLD BEARD IS CALLED UTKU, AND I SENT HIM SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FESTIVAL.

DT 500 MAG: -What is the full title of the festival and why is it called that?
UTKU: – it is called MultiNO !! :
The full name is a mash-up of EDGE OF WRONG, MULTIVERSAL, NONFIGURATIVE MUSIKK and REACTIONPOWERTRIO -which are groups, organizations, networks that are wandering in the same/similar sewers of the music in general.
DT 500 MAG: – What were the criteria for being a part of the festival as an artist/performer?
UTKU: – asking if there was a slot, for something not so conventional, but not necessarily.
” Being involved and not being a snob about anything you do…”
UTKU: – Musicians/performers involved, were somehow already connected to the scene and the networks mentioned in the previous question, so it was instead a gathering as the name suggests that a festival that was curated conventionally.
DT 500 MAG: – What steps were taken, i.e., what people or organizations were contacted to set up the festival and what kind of support did you get?
UTKU: – some venues and other event series were contacted, which are a bit more established, but the support we were able to get from them was few of them coming and performing during this gathering which was nice. We did the official pre-party of all ears festival thanks to the initiation and will of guru Moe.

UTKU: -The musicians who are involved and the spaces, were the ultimate support, especially Deichmanske Bibliotek in G.løkka who hosted 9 days out of 10 free of charge and contributed to cover some part of the travel expenses of all the foreign musicians coming in town.
DT 500 MAG: – How did people get to know about it?
UTKU:- pass apar ola (word of mouth), FB and Landeskog, I assume, we didn’t even print flyers or posters until the first
DT 500 MAG: – Can the festival be followed from abroad, is it being streamed?
UTKU: – there are two youtube channels:
UTKU: -there should be a bunch of videos from what has been happening in the previous days…
DT 500 MAG: – Is it archived?
UTKU: -it is archived by videos, and some audio rec as well… But since the bar and kitchen crew is dealing with the videos as well, we need people doing the bar and kitchen for the next editions so it could be a bit better organized…
DT 500 MAG: -Is there a net page?
DT 500 MAG: – How has the festival evolved and where would you like to take it next?
UTKU: – it is already a roaming, itinerant situation, and we’d like to keep it that way. At the moment Berlin and Oslo being the base, the next gathering will take place in Istanbul, in collaboration with art is dead – a.i.d. , reaction power trio RPT and Multiversal in March 17th-20th with other silent partners most likely. After that, we hope to expand towards the depths of Asia, and beyond and there’s also a Mediterranean edition of the sea that is being brainstormed…
THE AIM OF MULTIVERSAL IS TO DISCOVER INDEPENDENT REALITIES (MUSICIANS, ARTISTS, PERFORMERS, AND SPACES) CONCENTRATING ON SOUND AND IMPROVISATION (NOT AS A GENRE BUT AS A METHOD), CREATING PLATFORMS AND OCCASIONS THAT THESE REALITIES CAN MEET, COLLABORATE AND CREATE/ELABORATE NEW IDEAS AND PROJECTS.
CURATORIAL APPROACH OF MULTIVERSAL FOCUSES ON NON-COMMERCIAL AND LESS-VISIBLE REALITIES (IN OTHER WORDS; UNDERGROUND, D.I.Y.) AND HAS THE OBJECTIVE TO FACILITATE ENCOUNTERS, CONSIDERING THE PARALLELISMS, EXISTING OR NON(YET)EXISTING COMMON AND UNCOMMON ASPECTS OF THE PROJECTS, PEOPLE AND SPACES INVOLVED.
